Post-90s potter Ji Jiaxing: Bringing Ancient Pottery to Life in the Present

In Luoyang’s Luoning County, Ji Jiaxing, a 90s-born potter and inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, and his mentor Yang Hongliang, who has been deeply involved in archaeology, have been working together in a mountain courtyard to restore and innovate ancient pottery. Starting from finding mineral sources, mixing clay, and experimenting with firing temperatures, they have replicated ancient pottery from the Yangshao Culture’s Suyang type and other types in the Yellow and Luo River basins, and interpreted the meanings of ancient patterns such as human-faced fish patterns and willow-leaf spiral patterns.

To bring ancient pottery into modern life, they have been actively exploring: transforming traditional tripod li into “tea-cooking around a brazier” utensils, suitable for modern leisure and social settings; deconstructing and reassembling traditional patterns for creation, endowing ancient pottery with new vitality. With a youthful perspective and solid craftsmanship, Ji Jiaxing has revitalized the ancient pottery techniques that have slumbered for thousands of years, allowing the ancient history to resonate warmly in contemporary life.(Reporter Zhou Xinran)
