Recently, researchers spotted a Branta leucopsis in the National Nature Reserve of the Yellow River Wetland in Mengjin, Luoyang. This is the first time in four years that this rare species has been recorded in the reserve.

The Branta leucopsis is relatively rare in China. Its reappearance is a strong indication of the improvement of the wetland’s ecological environment. In recent years, the habitat for birds in this wetland has significantly improved, attracting the return of many rare species such as the demoiselle crane and the flamingo. Currently, 331 species of birds have been recorded here, with a peak total of over 150,000, making it an important “stopover” for migratory birds.

The person in charge of the relevant department in Luoyang City said, “Birds vote with their wings.” Luoyang is actively integrating into the Yellow River Basin ecological protection and high-quality development strategy, and striving to create a happy river where humans and nature coexist in harmony.
