Recently, in the National Nature Reserve of Mengjin Yellow River Wetland, black storks and other birds are at ease and at home, presenting a vibrant ecological picture. Engineer Guo Zhun has witnessed the profound transformation of this wetland from being “weak and sickly” to full of vitality.
In recent years, Luoyang has resolutely implemented the strategy of ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. It has comprehensively withdrawn activities such as sand mining and aquaculture, and strengthened restoration through measures like ecological water replenishment, water system connection, and habitat creation. A total of 31,000 mu of wetlands have been restored. The Mengjin section of the Yellow River has also been successfully selected as an outstanding case of a happy river and lake in the country.
The ecological environment has continued to improve. The number of bird species recorded in the protected area has increased to 331, among which there are 15 species of first-class national protected birds and 58 species of second-class national protected birds. The highest observed number exceeded 150,000.
Looking ahead, the wetland protection department will continue to restore the wetlands while promoting the integrated development of “wetland + science popularization + cultural tourism”. By organizing events such as bird-watching festivals and photography contests, it aims to guide the public to enhance their ecological protection awareness, making the beauty of the Yellow River, where humans and nature coexist in harmony, tangible and accessible.
